From Setback to Success: The Rise of Vanessa Munezero

Vanessa Munezero was born in 1996 on the Gashibuka hill, located in the Muhanga commune of Butanyerera province. Her early life was shaped by her upbringing in this specific environment, which served as the foundation for her later professional development.

The shift from her academic challenges to her current professional achievements has been marked by a commitment to quality and reliability. Today, local officials and clients recognize her professional standing. Déo Ndayisenga, the chef de colline of Rugamba, stated: "Mme Munezero est un tailleur honnête qui travaille dans la transparence, qui maitrise bien son métier et qui respecte le rendez-vous convenu avec ses clients." This reputation has been essential in establishing her presence within the local market.

Building a Sewing Enterprise

Vanessa Munezero operates a sewing workshop located on Kibimba hill within the Muhanga commune. She carries out her professional work using three sewing machines. These machines serve as the primary tools for her daily operations, allowing her to manage a steady stream of orders from the surrounding community.

Financial operations for the workshop generate a monthly income of approximately 900,000 Burundian francs for Munezero. This reported figure includes her regular contributions to a savings group, reflecting a disciplined approach to managing the revenue generated by her workshop. By maintaining this consistent level of production, she has secured a stable financial position for her business operations on Kibimba hill.

Empowering Local Youth Through Skills

Vanessa Munezero attended ETS Buntu for a sewing section after failing the national exam in 9th grade. This academic transition redirected her career path toward vocational training and technical skill development, providing her with the practical expertise necessary to launch her own enterprise.

Munezero has trained more than ten people in the sewing profession since establishing her workshop on Kibimba hill. She views this mentorship as a core component of her business model. She intends to formalize this instruction by launching a structured six-month training course. Participants in this future program will be charged 150,000 FBu for the duration of the course, a fee structure designed to cover the materials and specialized guidance provided during the training period.

Long-term goals for the workshop involve an expansion of her educational reach within the Muhanga commune. Munezero aims to train at least four youths every six months as part of a broader strategy to increase the local workforce. She intends for this initiative to result in a total of 32 professional tailors by 2030. Through these efforts, she hopes to ensure that the technical skills required for the sewing trade are passed on to the next generation of workers in the region.
