The CNIDH held an exchange workshop regarding its 2025-2026 annual report on 14 October 2026 at the Eden Garden Resort in Burundi. Mgr Martin Blaise Nyaboho, président de la CNIDH, addressed participants during the session to solicit feedback on the document.
Addressing National Demographic Growth
Burundi has experienced a significant demographic shift, with the national population increasing from over 3 million to approximately 13 million inhabitants. This expansion of the populace has exerted substantial pressure on the national infrastructure, including the correctional system.
The CNIDH annual report, which covers the period from January 2025 to June 2026, details the organization's ongoing assessment of detention facilities during this timeframe. To mitigate the challenges associated with high inmate numbers, the CNIDH requested the Ministry of Justice to expedite the release of acquitted individuals and those who have completed their sentences. Officials at the commission view these administrative measures as a primary step toward reducing the density of prison populations.
Advocacy remains a central component of the organization's operational strategy regarding these findings. Mgr Martin Blaise Nyaboho, président de la CNIDH, affirmed the commission's commitment to these institutional reforms.
The CNIDH plans to continue its engagement with the government to address the broader issue of prison overcrowding. By maintaining a dialogue with state institutions, the commission aims to align its recommendations with the legislative and executive processes currently in place. These efforts are intended to ensure that the management of correctional facilities remains consistent with the human rights standards mandated by the commission’s mission.
